Community and Comprehensive Area Representatives

Election of representatives
At school meetings to elect the School Steward, ASTI members in community and comprehensive schools should also select a nominee for area representative for the Community and Comprehensive Advisory Committee. The nominee may be a member in his/her own school or a member in another school in his/her area.

The area representative will be elected at a special meeting of school representatives of schools in the designated areas. The school representative at the meeting will ordinarily be the School Steward.

In schools with thirty members or more an additional school representative may be selected to attend an area general meeting at which the area representative on the special Advisory Committee will be elected.

Members in community and comprehensive schools in the area concerned may attend the meeting as observers. They will not, however, have the right to speak or vote at the meeting.

Work of Area Representatives:

    1. advise School Stewards and members in individual schools how to deal with problems;
    2. prior to all meetings of the Advisory Committee gather reports from schools with particular reference to implementation of ASTI policies, unresolved issues, grievances and matters which, in the view of the area representatives, require consideration by the Committee;
    3. make reports on the basis of (ii) above to all meetings of the Committee;
    4. and, visit all schools in their area once a year, if possible.

Maintain regular contact with the school stewards in the schools in their area.

Area General Meetings

The area general meeting of the School Stewards and other school representatives will be held in each of the designated areas each year.

The area general meetings will ordinarily take place on an annual basis. Standing Committee may decide to convene additional area meetings, if necessary.

At the first area meeting the election of the area representative will take place. Area meetings will receive reports from school stewards on recruitment, pupil numbers and local issues. A report on community and comprehensive school activities will be given to the meeting. Membership in Community & Comprehensive Sector
