Haddington Road Agreement - timeline of events

  • April 16 - ASTI members vote to reject the original LRC proposals by 84% - read more.
  • April 19 - Teacher unions decide to ballot on industrial action in the event that Government imposes cuts - read more.
  • Early May - LRC communicates a formal message to teacher unions from the Government that if no agreement is reached, the Government would move to enact legislation to cut pay and stop incremental increases.
  • May 8 - Ballot papers issue to all ASTI members
  • May 12  - LRC issues clarification on the application of the pay cut above €65k under LRC proposals - read more.
  • ASTI clarifies to LRC that the proposals rejected in a ballot of members do not form the basis for an agreement.
  • May 13 - Letter sent to ASTI members re. LRC clarifications calling for a strong YES vote for industrial action to protect teachers’ pay and conditions to the greatest extent possible - read more.
  • May 18th - ASTI CEC votes to attend LRC talks - read more.
  • May 20th - In a ballot of ASTI members, 87% vote for industrial action in the event that the Government acts unilaterally to cut the pay or worsen the working conditions of teachers - read more
  • May 21st - revised LRC proposals emerge from talks in the form of the Haddington Road Agreement.
  • May 23rd - Government publishes Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest Bill, 2013.
  • May 23rd - ASTI Standing Committee reaffirms rejection of original LRC proposals as revised proposals do not constitute sufficient change - read more.
  • June 21 - ASTI Standing Committee decides members should be balloted on Haddington Road proposals. This decision is to be considered by CEC on August 15th.
  • August 15 - ASTI CEC decides to put The Haddington Road Agreement to a ballot of members, recommending that members reject the Agreement .A ballot on industrial action is also to be held.
  • September 20th - ASTI members reject the Haddington Road Agreement by a 63% majority. Members also vote for industrial action by 65% - read more.

  • November 12th - new proposals on Haddington Road emerge from talks between ASTI and Department of Education and Skills - read details.
  • November 16th - ASTI CEC decides members should be balloted on new proposals and recommends that members reject the agreement - read more.
  • December 19th - Results of ballot known - ASTI members vote to accept the Haddington Road Agreement by 57% to 43%
