PROCEDURES FOR ASTI AWARDS

There are four awards:

  1. ASTI Emblem/Bookmark
  2. P.J. Kennedy Award 
  3. Thomas MacDonagh Medal
  4. Honorary Life Membership


1. ASTI Emblem / Bookmark

Branches should provide this award to all members on retirement who would normally have 10 years membership of the ASTI and are members in good standing.

Branches should host retirement functions as needs arise or once every three years.

2. P.J. Kennedy Award

Proposed nominators:

The Branch

Proposed recipients:

Members who have given valuable service to the branch and/or branch members.  Such a nominee might be a diligent school steward or a branch officer whose years of commitment and sterling service warrant such recognition.

The nominee will be a retired member.

Nomination process:

Branches will nominate members for this award at the September/October branch meeting.

The Award:

A parchment which truly reflects the contribution of the member will be presented to each recipient at a special lunch hosted by the President during Annual Convention.

All recipients of the PJ Kennedy award will, on retirement, be considered automatically for Honorary Life Membership by the awards committee.

3. Thomas MacDonagh Medal

This award constitutes a unique and profound statement on the contribution of the recipient to the ASTI.

Proposed recipients:

The Thomas MacDonagh medal may be awarded to current or retiring members who in the view of the awards committee have given distinguished service to the ASTI and who merit this honour.

Such service may include outstanding service in a representative capacity on an outside body, or within the structures of the ASTI, or may manifest itself as an action or position taken by a member which generates significant benefits for other members. Service at national level while it may lead to the award of the Thomas MacDonagh medal is not a prerequisite.

The proposed recipients will be nominated by a branch or Standing Committee by 1st February.  The branch will submit the nominee(s) to the awards committee at a date prior to Convention.  All nominations for the Tomas MacDonagh medal will be considered by the awards committee on a date prior to Convention.

Presentation of Award:

The Medal will be presented at the President’s Annual Dinner.

The Medal may be awarded on one occasion only. 

4. Honorary Life Membership

Rule 13, provides:

“The annual convention shall be empowered to elect a member an Honorary Life Member on the recommendation of the Central Executive Council, Honorary Life membership shall be conferred only in recognition of outstanding service to the Association and shall entitle the Honorary Life member to all rights and privileges of full membership including the right to hold office.  Convention shall be empowered to revoke such honorary life membership.”

This is the highest honour which may be bestowed on a member.

Proposed recipients:

This award is given in recognition of a member who has given singular and exceptional service to the ASTI and who:

  • displayed outstanding leadership qualities and/ or vision or 
  • who served as an inspirational role model to fellow ASTI members or teachers or
  • whose actions benefited the teaching profession and the ASTI.

Nomination Process:

Branch  ->  Awards Committee  ->  CEC  ->  Convention

(a) Branches should submit nominations by 30th October of the preceding year. The agenda for the October branch meeting should include nominations for Honorary Life Membership.

(b) The Designated Awards Committee will meet in the following month, November, to consider nominations.

(c) Clarification if necessary will be sought from branches.

(d) The Awards Committee will submit those nominees who meet the criteria for the award to CEC.

(e) CEC will, in accordance with Rule 13, refer nominees for Honorary Life membership to Convention.

A citation should be made at the presentation of the awards and a record of same  kept.

5. Composition of Awards Committee

The composition of the committee will be in accordance with Rule 125 and in addition  will include 3 members of CEC, elected annually at May CEC meeting.
