Commenting on today’s announcement by Irish Congress of Trade Unions’ Public Services Committee, ASTI General Secretary John White said:

“The ASTI has a mandate for industrial action up to and including withdrawal of labour.

“The ASTI and the other teacher unions will be discussing over the coming days how to implement this mandate. This is likely to include withdrawal of labour.

“The ASTI believes, in association with our colleagues in other public service unions, that negotiations should be held by the Government with the aim of restoring the pay scales, protecting pensions and advancing the education service.

“Damage to the education service is the last thing any teacher, and indeed the country, needs at this time.

“Teachers feel extremely demoralised by the succession of public sector pay cuts and attacks on the work of public sector workers and believe it is vital that a sense of fairness and social solidarity be restored.”
