ASTI representatives will meet PDE students in Trinity College and UCD next week in order to discuss the unfair treatment of new teacher entrants by government.
The meetings come ahead of a protest by student teachers against government decisions to cut the pay, cap the allowances, and – most recently – freeze the allowances of new entrants to teaching.
The protest by the student teachers takes place on Wednesday, February 22nd at 3.30 to 4pm at The Spire on O'Connell Street (and marching to Leinster House at 4pm). The protest is being supported by the teacher unions.
Following a series of cuts to new teachers’ pay, a typical teacher who finds work for the first time from February 2012 will earn 30% less than they would have earned 18 months before.
The three teacher unions have written to both the Department of Education and Skills (DES) and Department of Public Expenditure and Reform (DPER) in relation to qualification allowances for new graduates to the teaching profession. It is also being raised by teacher unions at the Teachers' Conciliation Council, which comprises representatives of the DES, DPER, school management and teacher unions. All three teacher unions – INTO, ASTI and TUI - are actively pursuing this matter. The review is not scheduled to conclude until the end of February.
