ASTI to escalate industrial action if Junior Cycle dispute not resolved

Thursday 17 March 2016

The ASTI will plan a series of strike days to take place from this autumn if the dispute over proposed changes to the Junior Cycle is not resolved.

The second level teachers’ union is currently engaging in industrial action, including non-attendance at training for the new Junior Cycle. ASTI members rejected the proposed new Junior Cycle in a ballot of its members in September 2015.

The union has stated that there is a window of opportunity for the next Minister for Education to resolve teachers’ outstanding concerns before the 2016/17 school year.

The ASTI says outstanding concerns include the lack of an externally assessed oral exam in modern languages and Gaeilge and increased workload and bureaucracy for teachers.
