Mistaken deductions from fixed-term teachers for ‘snow closures’

It has come to our attention that many fixed-term teachers were not paid for days when their school closed because of the adverse weather conditions after Christmas.  This deduction of salary is in clear contravention of the Protection of Employees (Fixed-Term Work) Act 2003.

As soon as the ASTI became aware of this development we contacted the Department of Education and Science who have conceded that this was an error and who have undertaken to repay this money as soon as possible.

If you have not been paid for these days you should contact your principal immediately:

In order for this repayment to be made the school will have to alter their returns to the On-Line Claims System and return all fixed-term teachers as present on the days in question.  Many schools will not have returned these teachers as present as there were no guidelines from the DES as to what they should do.  If a school did return fixed-term teachers as present then no deduction should have occurred.  If the school alters these returns promptly then teachers should be paid for these days in the payment on 25th February.

Teachers in VEC schools who have experienced similar difficulties should contact ASTI Head Office.
