ASTI General Secretary Pat King has welcomed the publication today of the OECD report Students On Line which shows that Irish students are high performers when it comes to digital literacy.

“The report indicates that Irish schools and students have embraced new technology and that teachers are steadily weaving technology into the fabric of second-level education.

“The report also underpins the importance of ensuring continued investment in the IT infrastructure in our schools. Digital literacy is now a vital life skill. We must ensure that our schools receive adequate funding so that all students can benefit from educationally rich IT experiences throughout their school days.”

Mr King added that today’s report shows a clear strength amongst our young people which we must be sure to nurture: “Given the clear strength and confidence amongst second-level students in the use of advanced technology, we are well placed to develop our country as a world class knowledge economy and society. This is why as a country we must shun short sighted budget cuts which can only impair our number one natural resource – our young people.”
