From this Monday, August 1st, Brendan Broderick, a science teacher at Templeogue College in Dublin, assumes the role of President of the ASTI – the largest second-level teachers’ union in Ireland.

Brendan has stated that his key priorities for the coming year are protecting the education service from further cutbacks and improving the working lives of recently qualified teachers, many of whom spend years in precarious employment and who now face inferior terms and conditions including a different pay scale to that of their teacher colleagues.

“My ultimate goal is to reverse those education cutbacks which have had such a damaging effect on the teaching profession and the education service,” said Brendan Broderick. “Teachers are well aware of the economic reality facing Ireland. But education is the solution to this crisis, not the problem.”

“As a science teacher I am acutely aware of the issues associated with the teaching and learning of science and science-related subjects including technology and maths. It is widely accepted that these subjects are vitally important to the future development of this country. We must have a plan of action for our education service which involves protecting young people’s education and supporting teachers in their work. This is the only way we can ensure our young people can leave the education system equipped to drive economic recovery.”

Brendan is originally from Kilkenny and is a former student of St Kieran’s College, Kilkenny. He is a graduate of UCD and University of Limerick (formerly NIHE Limerick). Brendan has been an active member of the ASTI for more than 20 years serving as school steward, branch chairperson, regional organiser, and on a number of ASTI committees including Central Executive Council and Standing Committee.

The ASTI represents over 18,000 second-level teachers in schools all over the country.
