Defending new teachers against unprecedented attacks on their terms and conditions of employment is the key theme for the ASTI Annual Conference which begins tomorrow in Cork.

ASTI General Secretary Pat King said that from September, newly qualified second-level teachers face inferior terms and conditions than the colleagues they will teach alongside.
“New teachers have had their pay cut by 14%. This is on top of the pay cuts already imposed on teachers. In addition they face a pension scheme which will see them pay more into the scheme in contributions that they will ever receive in pension benefit,” said Mr King.

Five-hundred second-level teachers will debate this and other issues over the next three days.

Education reform is also high on the agenda. ASTI delegates believe that while education reform is vital, it must be adequately resourced. The ASTI Annual Conference takes place at the Silver Springs Hotel, Cork from Tuesday, April 26th to Thursday, April 28th.
