The ASTI Standing Committee tonight announced that it is to participate in the second day of strike action on December 3rd called by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions’ Public Services Committee.
In a statement following the Standing Committee meeting ASTI General Secretary John White said:
“Second-level teachers do not want to strike. However, in taking a second day of action, teachers are expressing their determination to see the Government engage in genuine discussions with the unions on a fair way of dealing with the economic crisis.
“Teachers are well aware of the impact of the recession on the communities they work in. They know colleagues, family members, friends and parents of pupils they teach who have lost their jobs or had their working hours cut. A major plank of the unions’ plan for economic recovery is addressing the job crisis and protecting the unemployed,” said Mr White.
The ASTI represents 18,500 second-level teachers who work in schools all over the country.
