John White, General Secretary, ASTI stated today that:  “all of the 550 schools where the ASTI has members were closed today. 

“ASTI members would prefer if they were teaching their classes but the solidarity of the support for the strike sends a message to the government that there is a fairer, better way than scapegoating teachers and public sector workers.

“An interesting side effect of the strike is the hundreds of new members – temporary and part-time teachers in the main - are joining the ASTI and membership levels are now at an all-time high.”
