ASTI General Secretary Pat King has responded to an announcement by the Department of Education and Skills on the reduction in teacher numbers.

“The ASTI is dismayed that despite repeated assurances that frontline education staff will be prioritised, an announcement has been made that the Government is to renege on a commitment made in the Revised Programme for Government.  The promise of 150 additional teachers in the Revised Programme for Government followed the loss of up to 2000 teaching posts across primary and second level due to the worsening of the pupil teacher ratio in 2009. The planned decimation of teacher support services for Traveller children and foreign national pupils is a further demonstration of its failure to protect vulnerable young people.”
