“We welcome the announcement by Tánaiste Mary Coughlan, Minister for Education and Skills, regarding the issuing of €20.75 million in grants to second-level schools for high-tech equipment.
“The ASTI had made representations to the Department of Education and Skills in relation to this funding which was due in early 2010.
“This funding will be used to upgrade technology in second-level school classrooms and will enable Ireland to begin to catch-up with our EU counterparts in terms of the provision of technology in our schools. The €20.75 million announced by the Minister is part of the €150 million Smart Schools initiative to be delivered to primary and second-level schools over three years. We urge the Minister to ensure the remaining funding is ring-fenced and allocated in a timely manner so as to ensure our young people receive the necessary opportunities to enable them to become the drivers of the so-called ‘smart economy’.”
