The Department of Education and Skills Circular 46/2011 on theJobBridge National Internship Scheme was issued in October 2011.

The ASTI is concerned that this scheme could be abused either in the treatment of interns or in the assignments that might be given to them. We have made our concerns clear to the Department, pointing out that any use of JobBridge to deal with the effects of reduced school services arising from the education cuts will be strongly opposed by the ASTI. JobBridge must not be used to conceal the lack of resourcing of schools.

ASTI members should note the following:

  • The scheme states that an internship must not cause an existing member of staff to be displaced.
  • Interns may not be used to fill a current teaching vacancy.
  • Interns must not be used to fill a post of responsibility vacancy that arises in a school.
  • Interns must be appropriately qualified.

There is a review mechanism in the scheme and we ask school stewards and all ASTI members to be vigilant in ensuring that there are no abuses of the scheme and to advise this office if such abuses arise.

In this light we are requesting ASTI school stewards to bring any concerns re the operation of JobBridge to the attention of the ASTI head office.
