Teachers are entitled to extra salary allowances for certain academic qualifications achieved.

Teachers in service before December 6, 2011
Teachers in service before December 6, 2011 who obtain a further qualification after that date will not be entitled to receive a qualification allowance in respect of this qualification.

Teachers appointed after December 6, 2011
The maximum amount payable in total qualification allowances to a teacher who commenced teaching after 6 December 20111 cannot exceed the amount payable for an honours degree – €4,426.

How to Pursue a Claim for a Particular Degree / Diploma Allowance

If you are not in receipt of a particular allowance that you believe you should be entitled to:

1. Submit a claim to Department of Education and Science, Salary Section, Athlone with supporting evidence, parchment, etc.

2. If a claim is rejected by the Department salaries section, a teacher can submit the claim to the Qualification Allowances Appeals Committee, again, with supporting evidence – parchment, marks, Degree awarding authority’s classification of degree (Pass or Honours). 

3. Seek advice of ASTI, where necessary.
