Two salary scales operate for teachers in second-level schools in Ireland.
Pre January 2011 salary scale
Teachers who were first appointed to a Department paid teaching position prior to 1st January 2011 are paid according to a common basic salary scale. Click here to view this scale.
Post January 2011 salary scale
Teachers who were first appointed to a Department paid teaching position after 1st January 2011 are paid according to a reduced 'new entrants' salary scale. Teachers who return to teaching following retirement after 1st January 2011 are also paid according to the 'new entrant' scale. Click here to view this scale.
Allowances
Teachers are entitled to extra salary allowances for certain academic qualifications achieved, and in relation to posts held.
Budget 2012 and resultant DES circulars made changes to what allowances teachers can claim. See below
Suspension of allowances from 1st February 2012
The Department of Education and Skills has released a circular announcing that, pending the outcome of a review by the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform, allowances are not payable to those who become eligible for receipt of the allowance in question on or after 1 February 2012. No additions to the common basic pay scale may be paid to new beneficiaries.
Qualifications Allowances cap from 5th December 2011
Budget 2012 imposed a €4,426 cap on qualification allowances paid to those who entered teaching after December 5, 2011 and ruled out allowances for existing teachers who achieved additional qualifications after that date.
