The Government must take immediate action to deliver on commitments made in April 2019 regarding new entrant pay in teaching.
Commenting today, ASTI General Secretary Kieran Christie said that since 2010 new entrants to teaching face career long pay discrimination: “Pay equality must be restored. It constitutes an abhorrent and unacceptable stain on the teaching profession in Ireland.”
“A number of months have passed since Government commitments were made regarding a review of the outstanding issues surrounding new entrant pay,” said Mr Christie.
“In addition, in recent months a number of other developments have taken place regarding wider public sector pay issues. It is now clear that the Public Service Stability Agreement is no longer viable as it stands and a review is imperative.”
ASTI President Deirdre Mac Donald said the continuation of discriminatory pay for post 2010 teachers throughout their working lives is morally objectionable: “The ASTI is the only union that took strike action in opposition to the discriminatory treatment of our lesser paid members. The ASTI will not relent until the moral imperative of equal pay for equal work is achieved.”
