Monaghan teacher wins ASTI award for service to union

A Monaghan teacher will receive the 2017 ASTI Honorary Life Membership Award in recognition of his exceptional service to the union at a reception in Dublin tonight (Friday, May 26th).

Pat Deery, formerly a teacher at Largy College, first joined the ASTI in 1970 and became a committed ASTI activist at school, regional and national level.

Pat spent most of his teaching career at St Tiarnach’s Secondary School which later became Largy College where he taught Irish, history, geography, Latin and music. He was an ASTI School Steward for more than a decade. He served as Secretary, Branch Organiser and Chairperson of Monaghan ASTI Branch. He has represented Monaghan teachers on the ASTI Central Executive Council for more than 17 years. He also served on a number of ASTI national committees including the ASTI Health and Safety Committee and the ASTI Education Committee. He was Chairperson of the ASTI Community and Comprehensive Committee from 2007 to 2013.

Honorary Life Membership is the most prestigious award that can be bestowed on an ASTI member. It is given in recognition of singular and exceptional service to the ASTI involving substantial and commendable personal input.

Pat will be presented with his award by ASTI President Ed Byrne.
