Dublin teacher wins ASTI award for outstanding contribution

A Dublin teacher will receive a 2025 ASTI Achievement Award at a reception in Dublin tonight (Friday, May 23rd) in recognition of her exceptional contribution to Irish sport.

Hannah Tyrrell, a teacher of geography, history and PE at St Patrick’s Cathedral Grammar School and a member of the ASTI, has excelled in rugby, ladies Gaelic football and soccer.

Hannah’s achievements include:

• playing for Ireland in the 2015 Women’s Six Nations Championship where the team won both the
  championship and the Triple Crown title;

• winning the 2023 All-Ireland Championship title, and being named Player of the Match, with the Dublin Senior
   Ladies Gaelic football team; and

• winning the FAI Women’s Cup Medal in 2011 with St Catherine’s football club.

Hannah is a mental health advocate and an ambassador for Pieta House. Hannah credits sport with helping her look after her own mental health and hopes that other girls can reap the benefits too.

In addition to teaching her three subjects, Hannah also coaches the St Patrick’s CGS boys’ basketball team and is described as a “role model for the students” by her colleagues.

The Annual ASTI Achievement Awards recognise and celebrate teachers’ contributions both in and out of the classroom and their impact on young people’s lives.

The 2025 ASTI Achievement Awards recipients are:

• Humphrey Jones, teacher as St Columba’s College, Dublin, for his contribution to education, including science
   education.
• Tony Kelly, teacher at St Flannan’s College, Ennis, Co. Clare for his contribution to Irish sport.
• Hannah Tyrrell, teacher at St Patrick’s Cathedral Grammar School, Dublin, for her contribution to Irish sport.
