ASTI President congratulates Leaving Cert 2025 students

‘We must protect education standards and the integrity of our Leaving Cert exams’

ASTI President Padraig Curley has sent a message of congratulations to Leaving Certificate students who are receiving their results today (Friday, August 22).

“Your whole school community is proud of you, especially your teachers,” said Mr Curley.

“All of you have achieved an important milestone in your lives. I advise you to stay calm and take time to explore your many options over the coming days and weeks. Even if you do not receive your dream CAO choice, know that life has a habit of offering meaningful pathways. Talk to your school, your guidance counsellor and your family. Know that the skills, experiences and resilience you have developed in the last number of years will stand to you as you move to the next phase of your lives”.

September 2025: Leaving Cert changes
“A key learning from the pandemic is that we must protect education standards and the integrity of our Leaving Cert exams, in the interest of all students. Unfortunately, the sweeping changes to the Leaving Cert coming in this September will not support this.”

Nine new and revised Leaving Cert subject specifications will be introduced in September. Each new/ revised subject will have an Additional Assessment Component worth 40% of students’ final grade in the Leaving Cert. Government-commissioned research into the impact of AI on the new AACs has yet to be published.

The ASTI President said that despite the major concerns of teachers and others, the Minister for Education and Youth Helen McEntee has chosen to fast-track implementation of the Senior Cycle Redevelopment programme:

“The ASTI’s priority is ensuring teachers’ valid concerns are voiced and addressed. We call on the Minister for Education and Youth to ensure that meaningful measures can be put in place to tackle teachers’ greatest concerns in a timely manner.”

Mr Curley concluded by saying that today’s Leaving Cert students have benefited from a fair and transparent assessment of their efforts.
