ASTI teacher takes over Chair of Teaching Council

The ASTI welcomes the election of ASTI member and second-level teacher Noelle Moran as Chairperson of the Teaching Council.

Ms Moran is a teacher at St Jarlath’s College, Tuam, Co. Galway. Ms Moran has been a member of the Teaching Council since 2016. She is also a member of the ASTI Standing Committee and Central Executive Council. She previously served as an ASTI School Steward, Chair of the Tuam ASTI branch, and as a member of the ASTI Non-Permanent Teachers’ Committee.

The Teaching Council is the regulatory body for the teaching profession in Ireland. Its functions include:

  • Regulating and promoting the teaching profession and the professional conduct of teachers
  • Establishing and promoting the maintenance and improvement of standards of
  • o    programmes of teacher education and training
  • o    teaching, knowledge, skill and competence of teachers
  • o    professional conduct of teachers.
  • Promoting the continuing education, training and professional development of teachers.

Commenting on Noelle’s election, ASTI President Ger Curtin said: “It is a great honour for a member of the ASTI to serve as Chair of the national teachers’ regulatory body. I wish Noelle well in her role.”
