Talks on pay recovery for public sector workers must resolve the issue of unequal pay for recently qualified teachers, ASTI President Ed Byrne said today.

New pay talks are expected in the coming weeks following the publication of the Public Service Pay Commission’s report. Click here to view.

“The talks provide an opportunity to right a significant wrong in public sector pay policy - the discriminatory treatment of recently qualified teachers and other new entrants who have inferior terms and conditions to the colleagues they work alongside,” said Mr Byrne.

In its submission to the Public Service Pay Commission, the ASTI set out its priorities for pay talks including:

·         Equal Pay for Equal Work

·         Pay restoration for public sector workers

·         An end to unremunerated additional working hours

·         Pension parity restoration.
