Applications are being sought from ASTI members intending to contest the forthcoming Teaching Council elections in 2024 for ASTI endorsement of their candidature.

ASTI members running in the Teaching Council election who wish to have their candidature endorsed by the ASTI must submit an application to the ASTI by 5pm on Tuesday January 16th.

The application form is available here. The application form should be emailed to [email protected].

ASTI members running for election in the 2024 Teaching Council elections must also return the completed Teaching Council nomination paper to the Teaching Council before 11 am on January 30th 2024. Please note, this is a separate process to the ASTI endorsement process.

The 2024 Teaching Council elections take place from February 22nd to noon on March 12th 2024. Voting takes place online.

ASTI endorsement process

ASTI Standing Committee has considered an approach to the electoral process in order to seek to maximise the number of ASTI members who will be elected to serve on the next Teaching Council.

There are a number of constituencies in which members may stand for election. The constituencies for election are set out below. It is the intention of ASTI to endorse candidates as follows:

Voluntary Secondary School Sector

The ASTI will provide endorsement for the candidature of all members in good standing contesting election in both constituencies in this sector upon receipt of appropriate applications.

ASTI members who are interested in contesting the elections in this sector and would wish to have their candidature endorsed by ASTI should email their name and contact details together with an A4 page (max 500 words) outlining their suitability to the ASTI General Secretary, [email protected] by 5 pm on Tuesday, January 16th. Education and Training Boards Sector

Please note that the ASTI has decided to restrict its endorsement to one member in good standing only in each of the two constituencies comprising the electors whose voting category is determined to be the Education and Training Boards Sector.

Standing Committee will decide on the endorsed candidate in each of the two constituencies.

ASTI members who are interested in contesting the elections in this sector and who would wish to have their candidature endorsed by ASTI should email their name and contact details together with an A4 page (max 500 words) outlining their suitability to the ASTI General Secretary, [email protected] by 5 pm on Tuesday January 16th. Community and Comprehensive School Sector

Please note that the ASTI has decided to restrict its endorsement to one member in good standing only in the constituency comprising the electors whose voting category is determined to be the Community and Comprehensive School Sector

Standing Committee will decide on the endorsed candidate.

ASTI members who are interested in contesting the elections in this sector and would wish to have their candidature endorsed by ASTI should email their name and contact details together with an A4 page (max 500 words) outlining their suitability to the ASTI General Secretary, [email protected] by 5 pm on Tuesday January 16th. Teaching Council electoral constituencies and ASTI endorsement 

  • Category 1: Primary Sector
  • Category 2: Second-level Voluntary Secondary Sector.
  • Category 3: Second-level ETB Sector.
  • Category 4: Second-level Community and Comprehensive Sector.

Category 2:

Electors who are registered to teach in a recognised post-primary school and whose voting category is determined to be the Voluntary Secondary Schools Sector

Geographical Constituency Area Number of Teaching Council members to be elected
Midlands- North-West The following counties: Cavan, Donegal, Galway, Kildare, Leitrim, Longford, Louth, Mayo, Meath, Monaghan, Roscommon, Sligo and Westmeath. 1

Dublin and South

The following counties: Carlow, Clare, Cork, Dun Laoghaire–Rathdown, Fingal, Kerry, Kilkenny, Laois, Limerick, Offaly, Tipperary, South Dublin, Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow and the city of Dublin. 2

The ASTI will provide endorsement for the candidature of all members in good standing contesting election in both constituencies in this sector upon receipt of appropriate applications.

Category 3:

Electors who are registered to teach in a recognised post-primary school and whose voting category is determined to be the Education and Training Boards Sector

Geographical Constituency Area Number of Teaching Council members to be elected

Connaught, Leinster, Munster and Ulster The following counties: Carlow, Cavan, Clare, Cork, Donegal, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown, Fingal, Galway, Kerry, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Leitrim, Limerick, Longford, Louth, Mayo, Meath, Monaghan, Offaly, Roscommon, Sligo, South Dublin, North Tipperary, South Tipperary, Waterford, Westmeath, Wexford and Wicklow; and the cities of Cork, Dublin, Galway, Limerick and Waterford 1
