October 5 is World Teachers’ Day – a UNESCO/International Labour Organisation (ILO)/Education International (EI) event, which recognises the importance of education and celebrates the work of teachers around the globe.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. The 2026 theme, 'Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures', highlights the importance of protecting and promoting the status of the teaching profession.
The status of teachers is reflected not only in the recognition and value placed on their work, but also in their pay, working conditions, professional autonomy and voice in education policy.
As the ASTI, alongside other public service unions, continues to campaign for fair and appropriate pay for public servants, this year’s theme has particular relevance. Fair pay is an important part of recognising the value of teachers and ensuring that the profession is properly supported and respected.
Celebrate in your school with the ASTI
| ASTI school staff are welcome to organise staffroom cakes to celebrate during the week of World Teachers' Day and recoup the cost by submitting receipts directly to their branch treasurer.
