Preventative advice for teachers to protect themselves from online bullying and harassment
- Review and maximise your privacy settings on social media platforms to control who can view your posts and personal information, who can follow you, etc.
- Think before you engage with students in any capacity on social media.
- Limit data and personal information you post online about yourself and think before you post.
- Avoid engaging with any unknown online profiles.
- Always log out of your accounts.
- Regularly change your passwords and do not use the same one for different websites / platforms.
- Never open unidentified, suspicious or unsolicited emails or messages.
- Do not respond or retaliate to any abusive messages / comments sent to you online.
- It is recommended to only engage digitally with students and parents on school devices.
- Carefully consider the taking of photographs with students as they can be altered and shared.
- Consider your background for online meetings. You may choose a blurred setting instead.
- Encourage management to regularly promote awareness around digital rights and responsibilities for staff and students.
