ASTI announces second one-day strike over pay

As up to 20,000 ASTI members prepare to participate in a one-day public service strike over pay on Wednesday, October 14th, the union has today announced its participation in the second public service strike day to be held on Wednesday, October 21st.

Pickets will be placed outside schools on both days.

In a message to ASTI members today, ASTI General Secretary Linda Kelly said Budget 2027 will not resolve the current pay dispute: “The provision of €1.2bn in Budget 2027 does not suggest the Government is prepared to negotiate a deal that teachers could consider credible in current circumstances. Wages fell behind prices by 5% as a result of the peak inflationary period between 2021 and 2025 and have fallen further behind in 2026.”

ASTI members voted by 95% to 5% to take industrial action, up to and including strike action, over the Government’s failure to negotiate a meaningful public service pay deal that addresses the cost-of-living crisis for teachers.

ASTI members began initial industrial action on Monday, October 5th including withdrawal from activities such as the Croke Park hours. This industrial action is ongoing.
