ASTI RESPONDS TO PAY EQUALISATION REPORT

The ASTI notes the publication today of the report on pay equalisation from the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform.

The union said it is essential that the talks begin immediately in order to ensure that pay equalisation can be implemented in a short time frame.

On average, post 2010 entrants to the teaching profession earn €4,000 less than a 2010 entrant with the same qualifications and experience. This is due to a cut to the salary scales of new entrants to the public sector, the abolition of teacher qualification allowances, and the appointment of teachers to the first point of the teachers' salary scale instead of the third point.

Applications for second-level teaching courses have dropped significantly since the introduction of differential pay scales.
