ASTI President Ger Curtin has welcomed the publication of the Department of Education and Skills’ report Retention Rates of Pupils in Second Level Schools – 2010 Cohort.
“The report shows that Ireland has achieved the highest school completion rate in its history and is now ranked second in the EU28 for the percentage of people aged 20-24 who have completed their second-level education. The report also finds recent improvements in retention rates amongst disadvantaged students, demonstrating yet again that Irish second-level schools deliver on equality as well as quality,”.
However, the ASTI President said Ireland must invest more in young people’s education. “In the recently published international report Education at a Glance 2017, the OECD stated that Ireland needs to invest more in education. The report found that in 2014 the average expenditure on education in countries as a percentage of GDP was 5.2% compared to 4.8% in Ireland.”
