Inclusive education, quality curriculum reform and new teachers’ work conditions to dominate ASTI conference

Approximately 450 second-level teachers from all over the country will gather in Wexford from April 23rd for three days to debate the issues of most concern to teachers.

Key debates at the ASTI Annual Convention 2019 will capture the union’s concern that entry into second-level teaching is becoming increasingly unattractive for graduates, many of whom now require a two year Master’s. Under the current two-tier pay arrangements, these teachers will earn significantly less over the duration of their careers than the colleagues they work alongside.

Students’ education

ASTI members will also discuss the need for investment in inclusive education in Ireland. While the vast majority of students with special education needs are attending mainstream schools and are in mainstream classes, the ASTI is extremely concerned that teachers’ commitment to inclusive education is not being supported by the necessary resources, training and time allocation for professional collaboration.

A separate debate on Senior Cycle reform will call on the Government to commit to maintaining independent, impartial assessment of the Leaving Certificate.

Teacher workload

A number of motions at this year’s Annual Convention relate to increased workload and work intensity in teaching, which is having a negative impact on teaching and learning in the classroom.

The ASTI Annual Convention 2019 takes place in Clayton Whites Hotel, Wexford on April 23rd, 24th, and 25th.
