Changes to compulsory retirement age for original scheme members

The government recently announced that they are bringing proposals to the Oireachtas to legislate to extend the mandatory retirement age to 70 for original scheme members. (Original scheme members are teachers who joined one of the teachers’ pension schemes before 1st April 2004, whose service has not been interrupted for a period greater than 26 weeks.) The ASTI anticipates that this legislation will be given effect in time for teachers who would otherwise be compelled to retire in 2019.

Temporary arrangements are currently in place for original scheme members who wish to continue teaching after 65.

Further updates will be posted on this website.
