ASTI recommends members accept new Senior Cycle proposals in ballot

The ASTI’s Central Executive Council has decided to ballot members on proposals contained in the document Senior Cycle Redevelopment – Implementation Measures and Addendum, with a recommendation that members accept the proposals.

This follows negotiations between ASTI representatives and the Department of Education and Youth on additional supports for teachers and schools implementing the new Senior Cycle Redevelopment programme.

The ASTI had sought additional measures including extra funding and resources for schools, training and other supports for teachers, including legal protection for teachers regarding Additional Assessment Components (AACs).

The new proposals constitute a significant improvement on the provisions of the original Senior Cycle Redevelopment Implementation Support Measures document, including:

  • A €2 million implementation grant for schools
  • A laboratory and digital support assistants pilot scheme
  • Defined legal protection for teachers/ principals regarding authentication of coursework
  • Additional targeted training for science teachers
  • Clear parameters for assessment in subjects awaiting revision under the Senior Cycle Redevelopment programme.

The ballot will take place over the coming weeks. The ASTI is encouraging all members to access full and verified information from official ASTI publications and the ASTI website in the coming days and weeks.
